This stunning arrangement of coloured bottles all the way up to the ceiling, is what first lured us into this charming little wine bar in the Plaka in Athens!
“BRETTOS” is the oldest distillery in Athens, started in 1909 by Michael Brettos, who produced his own ouzo, brandy and liqueurs, using old family recipes. It has changed hands since (just after our visit in 2007, if I am not mistaken) but the new owners have apparently tried their best to retain the original decor and atmosphere!
Arranged on another wall are old barrels that are still used! We dropped in on our last afternoon to choose a few bottles of Greek wine to bring home. The charming salesgirl insisted we taste several varieties and we happily obliged. We do not remember much of the rest of that evening
Cheers! And have a great weekend!
